CMS has issued an update that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin utilizing the CDC’s 2015 Life Expectancy Table on January 5, 2019. The purpose of the life table uses the latest methodology to estimate the life expectancy of individuals for future healthcare such as lifetime prescriptions/medications, durable medical equipment, hospitalization, etc. So, what does this mean for you? In short, any future WCMSA proposal received by CMS or reopened on or after Jan 5, 2019 will reflect the updates in Table 1: Life Table for the total population: United States, 2015.* The new table could possibly end up changing the total allocation for future WCMSAs, however, the increases are minor and results are expected to stay relatively the same in many circumstances.
